The OODA Loop which stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act — is a powerful decision-making process used in self-defence to help individuals stay calm, aware, and effective under pressure.
Originally developed by United States Air Force Colonel John Boyd for aerial combat and military strategy, the concept has since been widely adopted in law enforcement, emergency response, business leadership, and personal protection training. In a self-defence situation, the first step is to
Observe your surroundings, identify potential threats, and recognise danger signals early. You then
Orient yourself by assessing what the situation means, considering escape routes, environmental factors, and your own capabilities. Next, you
Decide on the safest and most effective response — whether that means de-escalation, creating distance, escaping, or physically defending yourself. Finally, you Act decisively and with purpose. The person who can process the OODA Loop faster and more effectively often gains the advantage by staying mentally ahead of the situation rather than reacting emotionally or freezing under pressure.
